Binance went offline for maintenance today shortly after announcing new traffic all-time highs.

The leading crypto asset exchange Binance had to temporarily suspend its spot and margin trading services

Just a few minutes earlier, the CEO had boasted on Twitter that the platform could easily handle new record highs in website traffic.

Binance chief Changpeng Zhao (or CZ for short) tweeted that the exchange had hit a new all-time high in traffic on February 10, stating that the platform was „handling the burden“ of a 60 percent increase in traffic and the previous day’s record traffic have.

CZ also noted that the number of new registrations had reached a record high: „New accounts can still be registered, I don’t know how long.“

CZ’s deleted February 11 tweet

The tweet has since been deleted and BitQT published a notice of „temporary system maintenance“ about 30 minutes later. The exchange was able to resume operations about an hour after the announcement.

Only futures trading could continue as usual. The exchange announced that it had „suspended deposits, withdrawals, spot and margin trading, P2P trading, OTC portal trading, savings and repayments as well as asset transfers from sub-accounts, margin accounts, futures accounts and fiat wallets“.

After posting the maintenance notice, CZ tweeted that it regretted his previous post:

According to the website analysis service SimilarWeb , Binance was ranked 381 of the world’s most popular websites in January, making it third among websites in the SimilarWeb category „Finance> Investing“.

Traffic from Turkey doubled in January and is the largest geographic source of traffic for Binance, with Turkish users accounting for 6.89 percent of Binance’s 136 million monthly visitors. Russia was the second largest traffic source with 6.53 percent, followed by the USA with 5.11 percent, Great Britain with 4.70 percent and France with 3.50 percent.

After the storming of the Capitol, reports have surfaced revealing a generous Bitcoin donation from France to right-wing extremists in the US.

The online medium yahoo! News writes in an exclusive report that right-wing extremists in the USA received a generous Immediate Edge review donation one month before the storming of the Capitol.

Accordingly, on December 8, 28.15 BTC (500,000 US dollars) were transferred to 22 wallets of various personalities and organizations from the right-wing political spectrum in the country

The software company Chainalysis carried out research based on the Yahoo data on the origin of the donation. The tracks lead to France. Accordingly, the donations came from an account on a French crypto exchange and went, among other things, to right-wing news sites and influencers such as VDARE, Daily Stormer or Nicholas Fuentes. According to research by Chainalysis, it is a French programmer who runs a blog. The research company interpreted one of the contributions as a farewell letter. There the French prophesied the „decline of western civilization“ and therefore bequeathed his fortune to „certain purposes and people“. It remains unclear whether the financier is actually dead. However, there has been no new entry on the programmer’s blog since 2014.

According to an anonymous source, law enforcement and intelligence agencies are now investigating the suspicious transaction to learn more about the financial background of the riot in Washington. In doing so, the government hopes to prevent future attacks and to uncover potential foreign involvement or support for right-wing activities at an early stage. At a press conference, US Attorney Michael Sherwin said the FBI viewed the investigation as „a significant counter-terrorism or counter-espionage“ investigation. To this end, the investigative authorities are currently viewing money, travel and communication records as well as dispositions and general movements.

Misleading presentation slows Bitcoin adoption

Bitcoin still has a dirty image. But although the word has got around among criminals that there are definitely more anonymous crypto currencies than Bitcoin, the best known of the digital currencies is still used for illegal purposes. There are currently dubious offers on the Darknet where you should be able to secure a corona vaccine against Bitcoin.

CEO of XP Investimento recommends that everyone should have some investment in cryptomoeda

XP Investments CEO Guilherme Benchimol has stated that cryptomyces have 50% of ‚going well‘ as a disruptive form of payment in the digital economy and has recommended that everyone should have a small exposure to the crypto market.

Thus, during a question and answer session promoted during a live of the newspaper Valor Econômico.

At Santander’s conference, President of the Central Bank guarantees that Brazil will have ‚Real Digital‘ and plans to end the physical money

Benchimol, who is also one of the founders of XP Investimento, one of the largest brokers in Brazil, said he is optimistic and pessimistic about cryptoactives.

„I have a part of myself optimistic and the other is pessimistic. My optimism is about the possibility of Bitcoin Hero becoming a means of payment (…) If this happens in the long term, I think that in fact we could have a transformation in the world financial environment. Obviously this is a long way from happening, but I think this path makes me optimistic even though I have many doubts,“ he said.

Everybody must have a little bit of cryptomorphism

Benchimol did not give many details of the considered ‚pessimistic‘ part that justify his ‚belief‘ of 50% in the future of cryptomorphs.

Ethereum will ‚bomb‘ in 2021, highlights Novadax President

However, the CEO pointed out that Bitcoin is similar to gold and that everyone should have an exposure to cryptomyces, but a small exposure due to market volatility.

„I think everybody should have some kind of exposure to this asset, but I would say that the chance to work is 50%, but as it is a volatile asset, this exposure should be small. I am not a specialist, I am giving my opinion as an individual investor“, he said.

This is not the first time that Benchimol ‚approaches‘ the cryptomoeda market.

End of an era: Banco do Brasil starts 2021 announcing the closing of 361 units and dismissal of 5 thousand employees

In 2018, together with its partners in the XP company, XDEX was set up as a company that offered exposure to the cryptoactive market without however allowing the ‚real‘ purchase and sale of cryptomites.

The platform however ‚did not placate‘ in the domestic market and ended up being closed last year.

Bitcoin futures facilitated over 11 million BTC in volume last year

Last year was volatile for Bitcoin and other cryptomorphs.

The Chicago Mercantile Exchange, or CME, has registered a significant volume for its Bitcoin futures trading product (BTC) over the past 12 months. „More than 2.2 million contracts were traded in 2020,“ a CME representative told the Cointelegraph. Each Bitcoin futures contract settled in cash at CME is worth 5 Bitcoin dollars.

The trading center recorded higher-than-normal figures as the price of Bitcoin warmed up in December 2020, after a fall from its historic 2017 peak of $19,892 on 1 December. „The average daily volume of BTC (ADV) reached 11,179 contracts (equivalent to 55,900 BTC) in December, an increase of 114% A/A [year-on-year],“ said the WEC representative.

The daily average of open contracts, or ADOI, „reached a record 11,108 contracts (55,540 bitcoin equivalent) in the fourth quarter, up 233% from the fourth quarter of 2019,“ according to a CME Group statement. Major players also appeared to trade, evident in the exchange’s count of major open shareholders, or LOIH. „The number of LOIH grew to a record 110 in the first week of December, indicating a strengthening of institutional interest,“ said the WEC representative.

WEC is planning a launch in February for its future Ether (ETH), which were initially announced in December 2020.

A number of major financial entities have expressed interest in Bitcoin in 2020, including MicroStrategy and Square, which has allocated large sums of capital to the first asset of encryption.

The EU Commission’s observatory and forum for blockchain technology has presented a comprehensive report on the use of blockchain in its member states.

The Center and the Forum for Block chain technology of the EU commission has made a comprehensive report to the block chain use its Member States on 3 December published .

The report with the name “EU Blockchain Ecosystem Developments” describes on 200 pages in fact sheets for individual EU member states the respective use of blockchain technology. This differentiated view is important in view of the widely varying development status and differences in laws and regulations .

After a general inventory for the respective country, the report is devoted in separate sections to the topics of blockchain adaptation in individual areas, the national startup scene and the respective blockchain community.

Each country factsheet is rounded off by a list of the most important blockchain startups and an assessment by two country experts.

The situation in the DACH region

The report confirms that Germany has a “very active blockchain ecosystem of companies and enthusiasts, especially in the city of Berlin”. There are also hundreds of nationally active companies, university degrees and training programs related to blockchain, as well as academic commitment to research and technology development.

Particular emphasis is placed on the blockchain strategy adopted by the federal government in 2019 , which will help Germany take on a leading role in the future when it comes to blockchain.

In comparison, Austria has chosen a “laissez fair” approach, the report says. There they limit themselves to „monitoring developments in the area of decentralized finance and issuing warnings to investors if necessary“. There is no specific legislation for crypto assets and existing regulations are applied to blockchain innovations. As part of the public-private partnership model, the Austrian Blockchain Center is also actively promoting the use and further development of blockchain technology.

Switzerland , which is also analyzed in the report, is described by the authors as Europe’s most mature blockchain ecosystem and a global hotspot, with particular importance for Zug, which is advertised as the Crypto Valley.

In this regard, actors based in Switzerland such as the Ethereum Foundation , Dfinity, Polkadot , Bitmain , Tezos , Cardano , Cosmos and the Libra Foundation are named . The outlook remains positive in view of the expected regulatory measures and the generally low tax level.

EU Commission strives for uniform regulation

As the proposals submitted by the EU Commission in September to regulate the crypto sector show, this blockchain technology and especially crypto currencies are taking very seriously. The present report by the Observatory is a comprehensive inventory that allows legislators, politicians and market participants to get a comprehensive overview.

According to some experts, companies whose activities are related to cryptov currencies and blockades are seriously concerned about the laws adopted by the Russian government and are thinking about moving out of the country.

As DP.ru reports, Yuri Brisov, a member of the Commission on Legal Support of the Digital Economy of the Moscow Branch of the Russian Bar Association, noted that global trends that have increased investment in cryptographic and block-chain companies are passing by Russia.

Brisov believes that the country is lagging behind the countries where the rapid growth of applications based on blockchain technology will soon begin:

„Most customers come to us with questions about how to move their business from Russia to jurisdictions where it is possible to work with cryptocurrency and blockchecks on a legal basis. Fortunately, there are enough such jurisdictions. In this respect, Russia is beginning to lag far behind the rest of the world“.

He noted that the last „major project that has caused a media furore“ was a loan secured by the cryptocurrency issued by Expobank in late summer.

Since then „nothing new or interesting has appeared in the market, although many expected the market to grow“, especially after the first Digital Assets Act was passed this summer.

„The industry has been waiting a long time for legislation, but in the end everyone was confused by the text of the law. Big business has either given up the bloc or suspended its projects in anticipation of better times,“ Brisov added.

Podwojona

Firma Blockchain Etherbridge zauważa, że od początku 2019 roku sieć bitcoin prawie podwoiła liczbę aktywnych adresów z 550 000 do zaledwie jednego miliona do sierpnia 2020 roku. Użytkownicy przychodzą i znajdują narzędzie w publicznym systemie płatności, jakim jest bitcoin. .

Central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) are on the rise. Numerous countries, such as China and Sweden, are already working on specific CBDC prototypes. A special form of a CBDC is a synthetic CBDC (sCBDC). In the case of an sCBDC, often also called a hybrid “CBDC”, the CBDC system is not managed directly by the central bank, but a large number of operational tasks are outsourced to institutions in the private sector, such as e-money institutions. In the case of an sCBDC, the money issued is 100 percent covered by central bank reserves.

In this guest post, Jonas Groß and Anna Maria Bracio explain such an sCBDC system and compare it with a “classic” CBDC system

An sCBDC is a form of digital central bank money that is structured in a public-private partnership. E-money providers get access to central bank money – in the form of central bank reserves – and secure the corresponding e-money 100 percent with central bank money.

But first things first: What is e-money anyway? The Bundesbank defines e-money as

any monetary value stored electronically, including magnetically, in the form of a claim against the issuer, which is issued against payment of a sum of money in order to carry out payment transactions within the meaning of § 675f para. 1 sentence 1 BGB, and also from other natural or legal persons are accepted as the issuer.

E-money is often stored either on prepaid cards or mobile phones. If a mobile phone is used to store e-money, the user pays the money that he wants to convert into e-money – typically via an app – to the e-money issuer. The user then receives e-money units credited to his mobile phone via the app.

How is e-money issued?

In order to be able to legally offer e-money services, the European Central Bank (ECB) and BaFin must first grant the e-money institute (EMI) permission to issue e-money. Compared to other financial services, e-money usually proves to be convenient, as e-money institutions typically have more experience in the field of user-centered design and the integration of e-money applications into social media (Adrian, 2019). In addition, transaction costs are usually relatively low and trust in e-money institutions is higher in some countries than in banks (Adrian, 2019).

Figure 1 illustrates the process of issuing e-money. The e-money issuer and the end customer act as the main actors. The end customer intends to hold a certain amount of money in euros as e-money units. The EMI creates digital e-money and exchanges giro money (bank deposits) at a ratio of 1: 1 into e-money units.

It should be noted here that EMIs are not allowed to grant loans with corresponding interest rates. EMIs primarily generate income from fees charged for converting units into e-money. They keep the end customers‘ money mainly in the form of bank deposits in one or more collective accounts (Adrian, Mancini-Griffoli, 2019). In this way, there is a certain counterparty risk: The EMI’s bank deposits, which consist of the individual contributions of the end users, can fail if the partner banks run into corresponding payment difficulties. In addition, there is also a risk of failure of the EMI itself (Adrian, Mancini-Griffoli, 2019).In order to increase the trust and security of the end users, the e-money institution can set up a trust fund into which it pays the end users‘ euro units. In this case, the trustee holds and manages the deposited money.
