Founded in 1956 by a group of citizens concerned about the change of emphasis in education from development of the intellect to developing socially in the United States, The Council for Basic Education was formed. From the beginning CBE took action in order to make sure all students will receive a proper training in basic education with emphasis on English, mathematics, science, and history.
CBE is a non-profit movement. Its mission is to advocate the proper teaching of the basic arts at US public schools. CBE promotes the teaching of the basic arts by creating and maintaining programs designed to promote better education of those skills.
CBE convinced of the relation between democracy and high standards in education has published periodicals on a monthly basis to provide a basis for its activities as well as quarterly publications. Besides organizing conferences and its published works, CBE started its programs in 1983.
CBE is ruled by a board of directors that functions independently and is registered as a 501 organization. The organization is the publisher of Basic Education, which comes out on a monthly basis.
